Physical Activity Related to Stroke Severity

Making News:

According to the American Stroke Association (www.strokeassociation.org), “a stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood (and oxygen) it needs, so it starts to die.” The number-three cause of death in the United States, stroke is considered a “preventable disease” in that regular exercise and a healthy diet can limit a person’s potential to develop the condition. Although stroke can still affect people’s lives despite their best efforts to participate in a healthy lifestyle, the severity and long-term outcomes have recently been positively associated with prestroke physical activity.

A study published in the October 21, 2008, issue of Neurology (71, 1313–18) stated that those who are physically active prior to suffering a stroke may have less severe problems as a result and greater chances for efficient recovery. Researchers combed through medical records of 265 people with an average age of 68 who had suffered a stroke but could engage in physical activity. Those participants completed a Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly questionnaire, which determined prestroke activity level. Study authors found that those who were physically active experienced less-severe strokes and long-term effects. “Exercise is one possible risk factor for stroke that can be controlled,” stated study author Lars-Henrik Krarup, MD, in a press release. “Staying fit doesn’t have to be a scheduled regimen. For the people in this study, exercise included light housework, taking a walk outside, lawn care, gardening or participating in a sport.”
