Inspire Your Journey to Wellness at the 7th Annual Inner IDEA® Conference
In the midst of a chaotic world, take time to breathe and restore yourself at the world’s premiere educational event for Pilates and yoga instructors, personal trainers, mind-body studio owners and wellness professionals.
In an increasingly turbulent, stressful and quickly changing world, the challenges to well-being are greater than ever—but so is your opportunity to help clients grow and flourish with fitness, vitality and resilience of body, mind and spirit. There’s no better way to help your clients on their journey to wholeness than to undertake your own journey at this year’s Inner IDEA Conference.
“Today it’s more important than ever that you broaden your understanding of the connectivity of body, mind and spirit and the wellness tools that can make a profound difference in the lives of your clients,” says Peter Davis, co-founder and chief executive officer of IDEA. “Few fields are evolving as rapidly as integrative health, wellness, positive psychology and related areas. [They] are showing us the power of integrating mind, body and spirit to achieve remarkable results that can change our lives. The public’s interest in and awareness of these areas have soared, and there’s new research every day. For mind-body professionals who want to stay on the leading edge of the most important developments and practices in integrative health, there’s no place like Inner IDEA.”
Inner IDEA may well be one of the most uncommon conference experiences in the world. It debuted in 2006 as the first event of its kind to address the mind-body-spirit health revolution by bringing together far-ranging leaders, programs and techniques in a forum that encouraged the development of personal and professional balance, wellness and wholeness. This year, Inner IDEA will feature more than 100 sessions and over 35 leading presenters covering the newest and most influential topics and programs in Pilates, barre, fusion and integrative fitness, yoga, nutrition, mindfulness, meditation, motivational coaching, positive psychology (happiness), tai chi, Nia®, GYROTONIC® exercise and much more.
Inner IDEA is known for its unique learning environment, which fosters an ambiance of calm and emphasizes wholeness of both the individual and the community. Unfolding in a nurturing, nonjudgmental environment designed to support all participants and many paths to health and wellness, the event encourages a journey inward, as well as a sense of belonging and connection with other participants.
“Inner IDEA is a sanctuary for growth, inspiration and learning,” says Kimberly Spreen, Inner IDEA programming director. “It’s an opportunity to focus on the present moment and explore what it means to have balance and integration between body, mind and spirit. It’s a personal journey as much as a professional one. It’s also the only event in the world where instructors can find this broad range of the highest-quality, in-depth, groundbreaking education all in one place.”
While other events focus specifically on yoga, Pilates, integrative wellness or positive psychology, only Inner IDEA brings them all together, delivering the highest caliber of training so that you can stay fully current in your specialties or expand your scope of practice into new areas.

Born with severe clubbed feet that required casts and braces when he was a child, Inner IDEA keynote speaker Max Strom overcame challenges to become one of the world’s most respected teachers of personal transformation. He has taught tens of thousands of students, and trains teachers around the globe to help people become happier, healthier and more empowered.
In his presentation, “There Is No APP for Happiness,” Strom will share his practical approach to happiness and meaningful living—an approach that fosters physical, emotional and mental wellness through practices such as forgiveness, gratitude, breathwork, yoga and meditation.
“There’s a lot of talk about the nature of happiness because it’s becoming increasingly scarce. It’s like the polar bear. We’re sensing the extinction of happiness in our lives,” says Strom. “As people are confronted with massive change, they can withdraw into more insular lives to cope. People en masse are turning to pharmaceuticals. One in four women in the United States takes antidepressants or anti-anxiety medication without seeing a therapist. One in four adults takes medication to sleep [better].”
Strom believes that developing real health and happiness in our lives requires the cultivation of meaning. “I think your existence needs to be meaningful to be truly happy. People define meaning in different ways, but for me it means that I’m contributing to the betterment of the world, my family and my community. When my life has a positive impact on the world, it reaffirms my connection with others. I’ve worked with tens of thousands of people, and I know that people derive meaning when they have quality, authentic healthy relationships.”
For a meaningful life, you need to know who you are and to practice self-awareness, says Strom. “You need self-inquiry—[you must ask] yourself questions to get to know your strengths and weaknesses, your blind spots, your addictions or the effects of childhood trauma, for example. You need to know who you are so you can make changes in your behavior. Without self-inquiry, you’ll stay unhappy. If you can do 1 hour of conscious movement four times a week, it can make a big difference.”
That practice must be mindful, says Strom. “It can’t be running on a treadmill while you watch CNN! It doesn’t work to disconnect from the body. It has to be an integrative practice, such as yoga, tai chi or qigong. It has to include conscious breathing to keep you present. It’s okay to do things like play tennis and golf, too, but you need mindful practice as well.”
Strom didn’t intend to become a teacher, but yoga and breathing practices changed his life so dramatically that teaching became a natural progression. “I was so powerfully changed when I learned how our breath is intimately connected to our mind and emotions. We have a breath for each emotion. When we’re angry, in grief or in fear, we breathe a certain way. If we’re living a stressful life and our breathing is shallow, the fight-or-flight response damages our body and our health. We don’t have enough time to restore the body, to digest, rebuild and restore the skin. [Chronic stress] even shortens our life span. But conscious breathing practices put us back into relaxation response so we can be alert and the body can restore itself.”
Strom adds that deep breathing doesn’t just help restore physical health—it also provides emotional relief. “When we become grief-stricken, for example, we cry and our lungs go into spasms; we express grief and also store grief in our body. I’ve never taught a breathing class where someone didn’t cry. It’s old grief coming out, sometimes old memories.
“Breathing exercises are so powerful. They can keep us emotionally healthy, which in turn can heal our relationships.”
