We are fresh from the 2012 IDEA World Fitness Convention™ as we write this—and we are still elated with what we believe was the best event our team has ever produced.
We are so grateful to the many thousands of you who traveled from more than 50 countries to celebrate IDEA’s 30th anniversary in San Diego (July 5–8) and to reinforce that continuing education and a passion for helping others to improve their lives are still high priorities. You inspire us and you humble us with the feats of transformation you perform with clients daily. Thank you for letting us be a part of your journey; and thank you for being a part of ours.
The anniversary cachet of the event was already special, but there was more to this than the simple marking of time and cutting of a birthday cake. It was a milestone for the entire industry. The fitness profession is indeed young, but it has made quantum leaps in the last three decades. You are exploring, discovering and inventing new ways to move people (both physically and psychologically). You catalyze transformation and are beginning to understand the power you create in others through fitness and wellness. The future is brimming with possibility for this industry and for all of you.
We are already at the drawing board for next year’s IDEA World Fitness in Los Angeles, because there is much to do if we hope to surpass the excellence of this year’s event. Mark your calendars for August 7–11; we hope you can make it!
We are looking forward to seeing some of you again next month for the 7th Annual Inner IDEA® Conference in Palm Springs (October 25–28), the premier educational event for Pilates, yoga and group exercise instructors; personal trainers; mind-body studio owners; and wellness professionals. Today it’s more important than ever that you broaden your understanding of the connectivity of body, mind and spirit, and that you acquire the wellness tools that can make a profound difference in the lives of your clients. Their journey to health, happiness and wholeness is inspired by your journey. When you evolve on all levels and flourish as a person and as a teacher, your clients grow and thrive. We hope you’ll join us at Inner IDEA, to be inspired yourself and to go home with renewed energy, clarity and purpose to transform all those you inspire every day.
We believe a sea-change is occurring in how clubs view their obligations for the continuing education of their employees. 24 Hour Fitness is making a financial commitment to help their personal trainers renew their certifications. The company has decided to pay for continuing education and for the time a trainer spends on that education. Making good on that commitment involves coordinating more than 400 clubs, 4,000 trainers and 25 certifications. Josh Lyon, 24 Hour Fitness’s vice president of fitness, reached out to IDEA to help simplify this process.
We created CEC Connect, a new club program that integrates IDEA’s learning management system, 200 online CEC courses and IDEA’s relationships with 141 certification and training groups. The 24 Hour Fitness pilot launched in June to 84 clubs and in August to all 430 clubs. The system automatically notifies trainers as their certifications get closer to expiration; tracks the status of renewal requirements, such as CECs; and checks on the currency of CPR and AED training. To fulfill their CEC requirements, all 24 Hour Fitness trainers now get unlimited access to the 93 CEC courses selected by Josh’s team.
While CEC Connect was developed to make things easier for 24 Hour Fitness and their trainers, IDEA is making the system available to all U.S. clubs and studios. We applaud 24 Hour Fitness for its decision to financially support certifications and continuing education, and we encourage other clubs to do the same.
Yours in good health,
Kathie & Peter Davis
