You would think that after 28 years of putting on a fitness extravaganza like IDEA World Fitness Convention™ our zest for it might be waning. To the contrary! As we’ve been reliving all the great moments from this year’s event in Los Angeles, we find ourselves filled with joy and satisfaction. We are thrilled that 8,000 attended this year and connected with one another while defining the modern fitness industry and punctuating the importance of what its professionals do to make the planet a better, healthier place. Frankly, we had a blast.
In an ocean of highlights, here are some of our personal favorites:
Setting the stage for any large event is crucial, and the 2013 Opening Ceremonies pulled out all the stops. Attendees were treated to a superb lineup of speakers and entertainment, including Elaine LaLanne presenting the IDEA Jack LaLanne Award to Zumba® founder Beto Perez; 12-year-old C.J. Senter, aka “The Workout Kid,” inspiring us with his youthful exuberance; Douglas Brooks, MS, presenting the IDEA Fitness Inspiration Award to Peter Twist, MSc; and former NFL star turned Broadway playwright and motivational speaker Bo Eason’s keynote.
With a whopping 360 sessions, ranging from loaded movement, body leverage training and parkour to self myofascial release, dance, yoga, Pilates and barre to management topics, mixed martials arts, high-intensity interval training, cycling and much more, you simply couldn't miss. A faculty of 180 of the industry’s finest educators led the way.
IDEA World Fitness & Nutrition Expo
In our largest, most varied trade show in history, there was massive quantities of equipment, nutritional products, footwear, apparel and other emerging product lines to learn about. Product knowledge is the key to innovation and variety, and this hall did not disappoint. Especially noteworthy was the expansion of the IDEA World Healthy Cooking Stage with its constant churn of cooking demos, food samples and lectures filling the space. Nutrition is a gathering force in the fitness equation, and it's here to stay.
As if the IDEA World Fitness experience wasn’t big enough, attendees got to merge with the masters in the Showcase Room, which housed “big sound, big energy and big inspiration.” This unforgettable group movement encounter included an impressive array of attitude and amplitude and was hosted by some of the biggest celebrity names in fitness today.
There are so many great details to recount. We invite you to experience them (or relive them) in this issue’s World wrap-up through the keen storytelling of our editors Sandy Todd Webster, Joy Keller and Ryan Halvorson, and through the exciting photography of Len Spoden. If you want to know where programming, training philosophy, nutrition, group exercise and equipment are headed, this is the best time capsule we can recommend. Enjoy!
Yours in good health,Kathie & Peter Davis
