Question

Is it true that fruits should never be eaten after a meal, since the sugar interferes with proper digestion and leads to weight gain?

Answer

The right time to eat fruits is whenever you decide to eat them. Consume them before, after, with or between meals—it doesn’t matter as long as you are striving for the recommended 11/2–2 cups of fruit a day. Nutrient-rich fruits are easily digested with or without a meal and are a proven food to eat for weight management because of their low-calorie, high-water and high-fiber content. The philosophy that fruits shouldn’t be eaten with a meal may come from basic diet principles of Ayurvedic eating, including food combining and individualized eating approaches based on balancing the three bodily “humors” (or “doshas”).
