Exercise Benefits Developmentally Disabled Kids

Making News:

Activities such as therapeutic horseback riding, treadmill work and group exercise programs have proven beneficial for developmentally disabled kids, according to a recent review. Authors of the review, which was published in the January–February issue of the American Journal of Health Promotion (2009; 23 [3], 157–67) combed through 14 studies and three other evidence reviews to learn about the benefits of exercise for this population. The reviewers found that kids with autism, cerebral palsy or mental retardation improved health and fitness levels and coordination. An important side benefit of engagement in physical activity was that subjects also found “some level of enjoyment” from participation.
