Do you know your target blood pressure? If you do, you are in the minority. Even when this question was posed to those who are hypertensive and most need to control their blood pressure, a whopping 70 percent said they didn’t have a clue, according to a new study conducted by Consumer Health Sciences, an international consumer health care marketing firm. The company surveyed more than 22,000 adults who had been diagnosed with hypertension, a condition marked by high blood pressure. “Hypertension is a silent disease,” says Joan Sinopoli, president of Consumer Health Services. “The fact that most diagnosed sufferers aren’t even paying attention to their target numbers is shocking. Patients just aren’t getting the message that this is a serious disease.” Fitness professionals can help spread the word by educating clients about the risks of letting hypertension go untreated. Professionals in the fitness industry can also spearhead educational campaigns in their local community by hosting lectures on the topic at their own health club.
