baby vegans

Food for Thought:

With more families adopting a meatless diet, parents are bound to have questions about raising vegetarian children. This is especially true for those who adhere to a strict vegan food plan, one that eschews all animal products, including dairy and eggs.

To fill this information void, the Vegetarian Resource Group is offering a free brochure called Vegan Nutrition in Pregnancy and Childhood. Among the points covered in the brochure are ways to introduce vegan foods; how to ensure that your child gets essential fats; cautions against substituting soy or rice milk for breast milk; tips on the best cookware to use (e.g., iron skillets to “unlock” iron in cooked foods); good sources of the most-needed nutrients; and recipes for kid-friendly meals. To order a free brochure, contact www.vrg.org.
