"You're either running from something, or you're running toward something," said Todd Durkin as he pointed to the PowerPoint presentation that showed a lion chasing a gazelle. "Decide what it is you're doing and create a credo that represents your best self. The lion only gets the gazelle a fraction of the time. Decide how you're going to make the best of your game time and downtime and make an impact." With this statement, the 2004 IDEA Personal Trainer of the Year and owner of Fitness Quest 10, brought his preconference session "A Day of IMPACT--A Life of Leadership" to a close.
And the 2014 IDEA Personal Trainer Institute was officially in momentum mode.
More than 400 personal trainers are scheduled to arrive in Seattle to join the ones who came early for the preconference options, which included TRX: Sports Medicine Suspension Training Course and NASM: Women's Fitness Specialist Workshop. If the opening class is any indication, we're in for a stream of steady inspiration from some of the Northwest's best.
While it may come across as a tad saccharin, I was so encouraged by the sessions I sat in on today and the people I met that I was inspired to create the following acronym, using IDEA's letters.
I: Investment/Inspiration: Let's face it, it not only costs money to attend the conference, but you also potentially lose money from taking time off. This can be a hurdle for many personal trainers, but the ones who make the right decision to invest in themselves find a wealth of inspiration that pays huge dividends. Not only do you learn how to do your job better, but you meet the right people to help you do it.
D: Dedication: The personal trainers who take the time to attend this conference are serious and dedicated to their clients and their own future. This brand of dedication is the stuff of success and is how entire communities are transformed.
E: Education: There is more than one way to train clients and research is ever-changing, which is why it's so important to constantly push your personal edge when it comes to information, technique and programming. The personal trainer who is constantly learning will be constantly in demand.
A: Advantage: The sum of investment, dedication and education is advantage. The personal training industry is growing and becoming more competitive. It's more important than ever to gain the skills and knowledge that will help you keep the advantage.
Welcome to IDEA Personal Trainer Institute West. Take the weekend by the proverbial kettlebell horns and train your career like you would an elite athlete.
