A new service will allow personal trainers to customize workout programs for clients, recommend how-to videos for specific exercises and track their clients’ progress over time via a handheld device and the Internet.
Clients who read about the occasional
athlete who suffers from a fatal incident on the basketball court or football field, or the marathon runner who “blows out his knees,” may ask, is exercise really safe? The best answer to that question is, Exercising is safer than remaining sedentary.
The first step is to create an awareness of what good posture feels like. I use a technique I call “sit talls.” Clients sit in a chair or on a bench in a relaxed position (but without leaning back), and place the fingertips of both hands on either side of their rectus abdominis. Then I say, “Imagine that if you could make yourself 3 inches taller, you would win $50 million” (or some other “ultra bribe”). Clients sit much taller and straighter. I make sure they keep their head level and continue to breathe normally.
Do you have clients with severe osteoarthritis (OA) who want to improve their strength and function? You may want to encourage them to exercise in the pool, according to a study from the December 2003 issue of the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases (vol. 62, pp. 1162-7). This study’s findings indicate that people with OA can exercise at much higher intensities than popularly believed.
Proper screening and risk stratification of clients who are starting exercise programs is important for promoting exercise safety and preventing adverse events during exercise. Personal fitness trainers (PFTs) must be able to utilize the proper tools and understand the information gathered from the preexercise screening. Components of this screening include the health history questionnaire (HHQ); physical activity readiness questionnaire (PAR-Q); risk stratification; and informed consent.
