Bikram Choudhury, who created a 26-posture series that is performed in a heated room, obtained a federal copyright for his asana sequence. According to a February 8 Reuters news story by Elinor Mills Abreu, Choudhury “has sent cease-and-desist letters to more than 100 Bikram yoga schools and teachers, accusing them of violating his copyright and trademark by employing instructors [who] weren’t trained by him.”

A new study supported by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute found that cardiorespiratory fitness in early adulthood significantly decreases the chance of developing high blood pressure and diabetes—both major risk factors for heart disease and stroke—in middle age. Fitness also reduces the risk of metabolic syndrome, a constellation of factors that includes excess abdominal fat, elevated blood pressure and triglycerides, and low levels of high-density lipoprotein (the “good” cholesterol).
