The traditional approaches of stretching, immobilization braces, corticosteroid injections and surgical release are not working because they seek to address the symptoms instead of addressing the underlying root cause of the problem. Clients always seem to come to us with their aches and pains. Sometimes the area that hurts is not the area that causes the pain. As a trainer, I am not qualified to make a diagnosis, so I would tell my client to see a doctor for a diagnosis and then offer to show the client some stretches to alleviate the pain and reduce the symptoms.

Movie stars, athletes and brides-to-be work hard to develop shoulders that are aesthetically pleasing, and shoulders are an integral part of the big somatic “picture.” However, there is much more going on in this area than meets the eye. The shoulder complex involves more than one joint, and healthy, functional shoulders are more desirable than ones that merely look good on camera. After all, looking good for the wedding is great, but not being able to carry your luggage on your honeymoon is not.

As this weekend of education, inspiration and fun comes to a close, I have to say how impressed I am with the experience I shared with hundreds of West Coast personal trainers. I have been to countless fitness industry conferences and events, and this one stands out. The program was great, as usual, and the presenters were all on target. However, the attendees really made this event shine in a specific way.

Only at a conference for personal trainers will you see people turning down the Doubletree hotel chocolate chip cookie.
