Weekly phone calls from a lifestyle coach helped inactive, obese middle-aged men and women achieve weight loss goals over a 12-week period, according to a pilot study published in Patient Education and Counseling (2009; Nov. 10). Researchers from the Veterans Affairs [VA] Ann Arbor Healthcare System in Michigan wanted to determine whether a phone-based program of self-management for weight loss would be feasible to deliver and would help participants achieve clinically significant weight loss.

Have you ever thought of adding phone coaching to your current repertoire? According to recent research, phone coaching may help clients lose weight. The study, which was published in the November–December issue of the American Journal of Health Promotion (2008; 23 , 121), followed 60 men and 60 women who were divided into
a coaching group and a noncoaching group for 17 weeks. Those in the coaching group received 11 half-hour sessions via telephone and lost an average of 7 pounds each, while the noncoaching group members lost 4 pounds.
