140: Creating Lifelong Fitness in Youth--Strength Development (Part 1 of 2) L/WS

Session Format: Lecture / Workshop

This hands-on workshop will describe the risks and benefits of a strength-training program for youngsters, and will include specific developmental milestones that influence training. Discussion of injury risks and guidelines will be presented as well as several modes of strengthening for children and adolescents. We'll also discuss the mechanisms involved in making strength gains in pre-pubertal youth. You will leave this session with the ability to design and demonstrate a developmentally appropriate strength-training program for youth of all levels. (This is Part 1 in a two-part series. This session is recommended, but not required as a prerequisite to session 169.)
