100: Introduction to RTS®—Exercise Mechanics…Viewing the Body From the Inside Out!
RTS Faculty, Tom Purvis, PT
Every form of exercise boils down to mechanics. Join us for this special course that will dispel all the myths and put you on the right track to creating exercise that will have value for your client. After taking this class you will better understand:
  • Why a dumbbell is not a constant resistance and tubing is not always more resistant when fully stretched
  • Why the motion you perform doesn’t determine which muscles are involved
  • Why leg extensions can improve function, while a balance board might not
Participants will explore and practice exercise mechanics by analyzing joints, motion and the application of resistance and manipulation based on various goals.
101: Balance and Mobility—Assessment and Training
Cody Sipe, PhD
An effective balance and mobility enhancement program begins with an individualized assessment battery in order to identify areas of deficiency that increase the risk of falling. This session will teach you a variety of valid and reliable assessments to objectively measure critical aspects of balance control including agility, mobility, functional strength, somatosensation, vestibular control, visual input and overall balance performance. Special attention will be given to scoring and interpreting results. In addition, you will walk away with exercises for the five areas of balance and mobility.
102: Spartan Training for the Warrior in You
Juan Carlos Santana, MEd
Physical training was first performed to prepare warriors for battle. Various forms of combat training have been developed for today’s fitness aficionado, from boot camps to cardio kickboxing. This session focuses on a unique model for metabolic training and the progressions that are needed to see results in a safe and effective environment. So, if you’re ready to get the science behind metabolic training and learn some new exercises that provide a unique blend of fitness and, yes, anger management, you won’t want to miss this session.
103: Solutions for Improved Lumbo-Pelvic-Hip Function
Anthony Carey, MA
Eighty-five percent of all adults will experience low-back pain during their lifetime. Limitations and dysfunctions of the hip joint result in a transfer of responsibility to the lumbar spine, which is not designed to work the way the hips do. We will take a look at the functional interdependency of the hips and the lumbar spine, and delve into the unique mechanical properties of the iliopsoas muscle and it’s affect on upper-body and lower-body motion.
104: TRX® Sports Performance and Flexibility
Fraser Quelch
Come and explore the principles behind suspension training, as well as the advanced training techniques that can be used to maximize sports performance and flexibility. Utilizing the TRX Suspension Trainer®, participants will experience a program targeted toward enhancing general athletic ability and the implementation of specific performance strategies for individual sports. In addition, we will introduce the concept of chain stretching, as well as discuss active, passive and dynamic stretching using the TRX and how to apply them to specific activities.,
105: Topics in Nutrition and Performance
Len Kravitz, PhD, Scott Josephson, MS
Part 1: Eating for Performance
This is a unique and highly informative session on nutrition and dietary practices. Sports nutrition is a core component to any program. Gain insight on specific strategies and preparations to give you the advantage you work so hard for!

Part 2: Nutrient Timing: The Future of Peak Performance
Join us for this groundbreaking lecture that explains a revolutionary approach to enhance performance, promote recovery and improve muscle integrity through nutrient timing. This technologically-advanced presentation will explain what nutrient timing is, the energy phase, the anabolic phase, the growth phase, the metabolic physiology and how to apply this totally new concept in training for endurance exercise and resistance training. A must-see presentation!
106: Surrounding the Dragon of Back Pain
Jon Bowskill
Working with clients who have back pain requires an understanding of the terminology and root causes of spinal pain. This interactive session uses real case history details to illustrate the key considerations involved in evaluating and developing exercise programs for clients who have back pain, and advises on how best to communicate with your clients’ doctors. We will also investigate the hierarchy of physiological control centers, which is commonly overlooked but provides essential information for achieving lasting results with your clients.

300: Seven Steps to Better Program Design
Alwyn Cosgrove
Most experienced personal trainers will agree that the days of providing clients with just a simple strength and cardiovascular training program are over. In our ever-changing world, we see that our clients’ lifestyles (and needs) have changed as well. This eye-opening and highly-experiential session will introduce the seven elements that must exist in a well-planned training program. By integrating these key elements into your clients’ programs, you can expect to see profound results!
301: C-4 Explosive Training for All Clients
Jay Dawes, MS
The C-4 method focuses on the use of compound exercises, complex training, calisthenics and circuits to incorporate power training into the conditioning programs of athletes, nonathletes and those with special needs. Experience fundamental training principles required to effectively develop, progress and modify exercises and drills based on a client’s individual skills and abilities. In addition, attendees will gain valuable hands-on training experience and learn dozens of new training drills and exercises during the lab portion of this presentation.
302: High-Speed Power Training—A New Approach
Douglas Brooks, MS
Whether you train seniors, clients or group-fitness participants in their forties, or coach high-level or professional athletes, the benefits of high-velocity resistance training are applicable for individuals of all ages. This session will help you understand when and how to implement high-speed power training into your clients’ training programs. Using smart tubing, BOSU® Ballast™ Balls and BOSU Balance Trainers, you’ll leave this hands-on session “worked” and with tons of resistance training power progressions that are backed by science.
303: Comprehensive Trunk and Spine Conditioning
Kevin Dunn, MPT
From stabilization exercise to core training, the literature is loaded with buzzwords and catch phrases. The body doesn’t know, or care, about these descriptive titles. A thorough understanding of spinal mechanics and resistance forces is necessary for good exercise design. Gain an understanding of the rules of the body by exploring the intricate world of joints, forces and muscles. Learn to examine the specific functions of individual muscles and their relationship to spinal mobility, and explore the truth about various forms of passive stretching.
304: Coaching the Mindset of the Postrehabilitation Client
Lisa Atkinson
Exercise alone will not help the postrehabilitation client make the lifestyle changes necessary to improve their health. Pain, depression, disabilities and worry can consume your client’s thinking and undermine their belief in their own success. This unique workshop will provide problem-solving approaches to overcoming barriers and essential techniques to help your clients understand and overcome negative internal messaging. The result will be a more confident client who is ready and able to manage their own well-being.
305: Going for Greatness!
Todd Durkin, MA
When do you ever get the chance to step out of your business in order to work on your business? This highly-experiential hands-on session will give you a head start on devising practical solutions to current issues, fears and challenges. Todd will facilitate and coach you through the same business exercises he uses personally and with his staff of trainers. Here is your opportunity to gain valuable business skills that will keep you Going for Greatness!
306: TRX® Sports Performance and Flexibility
Fraser Quelch
Come and explore the principles behind suspension training, as well as the advanced training techniques that can be used to maximize sports performance and flexibility. Utilizing the TRX Suspension Trainer®, participants will experience a program targeted toward enhancing general athletic ability and the implementation of specific performance strategies for individual sports. In addition, we will introduce the concept of chain stretching, as well as discuss active, passive and dynamic stretching using the TRX and how to apply them to specific activities.
