ACSM American Fitness Index™

Each year the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) tallies up the top fit cities in the United States. The ACSM American Fitness Index program was developed “to provide an evidence- and science-based measurement of the state of health and fitness at the community level throughout the U.S. Communities, organizations and individuals will be able to assess factors that contribute to health and fitness and measure the progress.” To determine rankings, the index facilitators look at factors such as levels of chronic disease conditions, healthcare access, community resources and policies that promote physical activity. Did your hometown make the grade? Here are the top five fittest cities for 2011:

  • Minneapolis
  • Washington, DC
  • Boston
  • Portland, Oregon
  • Denver
