Because you are focusing on the livelihood and/or ability of the client or member.

Mostly because weight isn't really a good indicator of most people's goals. You will be better off focusing on body composition and body shaping.

Hi Latasha,

Although weight loss is a goal for many people, I try to have the client focus on all of the other wonderful benefits of an exercise program. For example, more energy, reduced stress levels, reducing risk of diseases, better mood, better sleep, etc... These benefits can be almost immediate and can help the client shift some of the focus from weight loss--where results are not as fast. Weight loss can almost be thought of as a great side effect of an exercise program and healthy diet. Also, as Michael already mentioned, body composition is also a good indicator
of healthy changes.

Hope some of these reasons help.

Christine

I don't focus on weight loss, but rather in the overall physical and mental improvement. Weight can be a negative factor for many people and it can make them lose their motivation and drive. BF% is one factor I like to refer to and then look at other improvements they have made in their lives (lifestyle, mood, goal achievements, etc.). People who get fixated with their weight (no matter what the number is), they miss the big picture.

I will only "advocate" weight loss depending on body composition. Doing it for any other reason could send a message of preoccupation with weight which could lead to an eating disorder if a person is vulnerable and take the focus off of wellbeing for anyone else.

Hi Latasha,

there is a place when weight loss needs to be the focus. In cases of morbid obesity, where an extra 100 lbs. or even more make every step difficult and exercise becomes a study in patience, the goal needs to be to get rid of most of the excess. Once things are at reasonable levels, body composition and focus on health and wellness should take center stage over an obsession with weight itself.

Think about the old saying "A watched pot never boils" In other words, if you want to heat water until it boils, and you watch it while you wait, then it seems to take a very long time. In the same way, anything that we wait for with eager attention seems to take a very long time: like waiting for someone to arrive, waiting for the phone to ring, waiting for weight loss to be apparent. Also how the body reacts to exercise is an individual thing that no one can predict. I have the client focus on the other tangible benefits.

This is a business of support and motivation. A big key to long term client success is accomplishment and trust. It's like building a bank account.

So, asking clients to focus on the healthy deposits being made - exercise, food logs, healthy eating, positive attitudes, declarations - creates a feeling of success This "health" account is for the long term. The fitness coach can focus on the results - weight loss, strength gain, flexibility improvement. The client needs to trust that the correct guidance is being provided.
