Joanne, I don't have the slightest clue. This was just my guessed answer/assumption. Maybe it's something we all need to bug AFAA about and get them on board.

Wish I knew more. That is all the information IDEA has expressed on this portal.

I use to have AFAA but let it expire because it wasn't an accredited certification through NCCA (National Commission for Certifying Agencies) as the other big name certifications are (i.e. NASM, NSCA, ASCM, ACE). From what I was told through my professors in college is that the certifying organizations who became accredited through NCCA went through a tougher process then those who didn't, thus making them more credible.
My guess is that IDEA may only want credible fitness certifications on their list to choose from.

Jon, there are certification bodies on this portal who are not NCCA accredited yet one can have their credentials verified. WITS is one of them.

Hi all,
Following is an excerpt from a letter posted on the president of AFAA's blog that addresses the accreditation issue. The full text can be found by clicking here: http://pdfs.afaa.com/afaa_letter_07-12-11.pdf
We hope this clarifies things a bit!
" ...certification organizations for fitness professionals have two principal choices for the accreditation of their certification activities: the NCCA or an organization recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) and/or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) such as the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC). While the DETC is recognized by both the USDE and CHEA to engage in its accreditation activities, the NCCA itself is not recognized by either of these organizations and has no third-party accreditation. As a consequence, some fitness professional certification organizations, such as AFAA, have preferred and chosen the DETC path to accreditation which is recognized by both the United States Department of Education and CHEA..."

YEA...AFAA... to be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
Before certifications, there was the Department of Education.
