Conclusive evidence from Aerobic has shown one of the best methods in treating depression. Anaerobic literature is very sparse to my knowledge.

According to the ACSM "exercise and physical activity have well-documented positive effect" on "anxiety, depression and stress."
The ACSM goes on to further highlight that there are established exercise guidelines for those diagnosed with clinical depression. The research they reference is Meyer T. Broocks A. Therapeutic impact of exercise on psychiatric diseases; guidelines for exercise testing and prescription. Sports Med. 2000;30(4)269-279.
Another study revealed that aerobic exercise is effective in helping those diagnosed with depression. Following is the name of the study.

This is something that we covered in my Physiological Psychology class. I know that at the time, we discussed a number of treatment options including light therapy, electric shock for severely depressed patients, different SNRI's and SSRI's along with stimulant medication, and exercise as a possible "prescription" for relieving symptoms of depression.
As far as aerobic or anaerobic. I would surmise that aerobic would be better considering a person can definitely sustain a higher average level of activity over an extended period of time. In theory it's similar runner's euphoria from my understanding.
You might consider consulting a psychiatrist in your area for a definitive answer.

I think moving your body however you can helps with depression.
Many physicians are now finally prescribing exercise first, anti depressents last!
I have a client who really gets into boxing to relieve his stress/depression!

In my opinion, the answer would be aerobic training. I'm thinking that a lot would depend upon the source of the depression though.
