Anything with lean protein is always your first choice. If you can - lowfat cottage cheese, cheese; veggies with peanut/almond butter; fruit (apples, primarily); whole grain crackers; protein bars if they are not soy-based and high in sugar; nuts (although they are high in calories and fat, they will add fiber and so many other nutrients - excellent choice if you don't overdue it.) .

Thanks Tina. I generally find myself eating a Balance Bar, is that OK?

Avocado with lunch meat & nuts (no peanuts), applesause with whey protein, flax seed & almond butter, apple or banana with sunbutter, tuna with salsa, avocado & sliced jicama strips, hard boiled eggs with avocado and tomato.

I'm Paleo so these are some of the things I like to eat.

The snack truly depends on what your activity levels are throughout the day. Not all snacking is created equal, big smile. Your current body weight, activity levels, fitness goals and health status have a lot to due with the choices you'll make in the snacking department of life. All the answers have some great snack suggestions however, the main thing is none of us truly know your goals and what you're trying to achieve for your definition of optimal well-being. One can never go too wrong with an apple or hard boiled egg or small dose of good nuts ( walnuts, almonds) etc. My fav is 1/2 of PB&J on good whole wheat bread. Good luck!

I agree with Tina's answer, but to add more specifics try light cheese sticks - they are portable and easy to keep cool in an insulated lunch box with an ice pack. Tuna in foil pouches are sold in grocery stores and are another easy open option. Try Starkist tuna creations - portable, tasty, low calorie, lowfat, and high in protein. Apples, pears, bananas - all easy to transport and consume. Make your own trail mix with peanuts and raisins. Lastly, hard boiled eggs are terrific; greek yogurt topped with nuts; and Nature Valley granola bars, oats and honey, are some of my favorites.

I do not recommend eating snacks. Most snacks tend to be unhealthy, due to their connivence factor they are usually, processed, and loaded with ingredients that are not pertinent to health.

SOLUTION:
Eat Meals. Take how every many meals you eat and split them up to accommodate your hunger throughout the day. Therefore, if you eat 3 meals, create smaller meals and use 4, or take 5 and make even smaller. This will provide satiety you need throughout the day and be a MUCH better alternative to snacks.

Hope this helps!

Most people get hungry in the afternoon and an afternoon snack is a good strategy to stave off hunger and keep from overeating at dinner. A healthy snack should contain a lean protein, some complex carbohydrates and even a healthy fat. Good choices would be nonfat yogurt with a fresh fruit, hummus with whole grain pita, apple with peanut butter, dried fruit with unsalted nuts, pretzels with string cheese or low-fat chocolate milk with crackers or fig newtons (whole wheat).
Depending on how hungry you are, even half a turkey sandwich with avocado or half a PB & J would be good.
Eating a healthy snack in the afternoon can help you get over the afternoon slump, keeps your blood sugar stable and helps you concentrate better.

Pepitas (pumpkin seed kernels) come roasted and salted or wasabi covered. Sunflower kernels, honey roasted cashews. I found some affordable almond butter at Walmart (Maranatha brand) it is a nice change from peanut butter you can put it on a banana or on natural bread with 100% fruit preserves(no sugar sweetened with juice).

A lot depends on your specific dietary needs (e.g. do you have any special dietary requirements, do's and don'ts), and availability. Personally, I like to take things with me when I'm working so that I can control both quantity and quality. Bananas, other fruit like apples, nuts, peanut butter and crackers, low fat cheese are all things that I like 'snacking' on while working.

You may be getting hungry because your blood sugar is low
Think about more fuel at lunch: and be prepared for the late afternoon slump by incorporating protein at that time:
Water is also essential.

Carrots, an apple, a banana, a high carb-low fat muffin. I am an advocate of frequent smaller meals vs. two or three big meals. It helps maintain a more stable blood glucose. And I agree with Susan, plenty of water, not coffee or colas with caffeine, since they are diuretics.

Take care.

Great question. First, choose something you enjoy eating. Second, choose something with minimal calories, full of micronutrients, low fat and fiber. Based on that information, I highly recommend choosing fruits and veggies that you enjoy. Another option, choose a granola bar with minimal calories, lean protein, low fat and fiber.

Just about anything besides vending machine foods. Yikes. Try a peanutbutter and jelly sandwich, banana chips, beef jerky, most fruits and veggies, plan ahead-pack these things into your lunch box the night before or the morning of. 5 minutes of pre-planning can save you 5 days worth of regret after eating out of the vending machine.

Hi Jason,

We all love good snacks that keep us going between breakfast and lunch. You can have sweet snacks, carrot, peanuts, almonds, seeds, whole grains and fresh fruit juices at your work place that supply good nutrients to the body. Stay away from soda, chips and other kinds of junk food, which do not contribute in terms of healthy nutrition.
There are several companies such as http://www.sheffafoods.com/products/sweet-snack-mix/ , healthysnackstore.com among others that sell packaged snack foods that are natural and sure to be delightful for the family as well. Another benefit is no hassle of having to make them at home.
