Great question Laura!
I guess that would depend upon what type of Facebook account you have. Is it dedicated to your business? I state this as I am in the throws of starting a Facebook page specifically for my business.
I am kind of old-fashioned when it comes to socializing online. There are somethings I just want to do in person. In a nutshell, I try to keep it professional.

We have a Facebook page for the martial art school I teach at and do kickboxing classes. We post events and school news, pics of various events, videos of classes, and students can do the same.
I work in corporate fitness and at the moment we have a Facebook page (Pitney Bowes Project Living) set up to share healthy living tips from experts on nutrition, keeping fit, becoming tobacco free, emotional & financial health helping employees & family members to be healthy & live well.
I suggest if you are a PT with a following that you have a separate page aside from your personal.
With Google+ you can have separate circles for different groups of people and choose what to share.

I don't have a Facebook. Believe it or not, I'm not the only 20-something that I know without one. I've often considered creating one for professional purposes, but I don't know if it'd be beneficial or not. I suppose if I decide to create one, the most personal that I'll get with it might be to include some pictures from fundraisers or other benefits.
I don't know if I'd be comfortable sharing too much personal information like pictures of me out for a picnic with my girlfriend or something like that. I definitely wouldn't include any of my personal opinions on things non-fitness or things not related to healthy living. As a professional, I recognize the importance of appealing to the widest client base possible. Personal opinions not related to fitness or health could severely limit your potential client base. I could be reading too much into it, though.

I have a business Facebook page which is completely dormant, and, quite frankly, I want to keep it that way. I created it because I thought I should, but now I cannot remember the reason why.
In addition to my own website and IDEA fitnessconnect, I send e-mails to my clients, and that does well for me. Another consideration is that most of my clients are not into social networking.

I have a business page as well as one called Meathead Nation. Meathead Nation is where I will post some blogs, funny videos, and PR's that a client may hit. It is a fun site and intended to be that way. I only use first name and last initial one I post someones PR.

I just scheduled a consult that was because I posted a relevant article. The article was on ACL tears in female athletes and low and behold I received a call from somebody that is post therapy from an ACL repair.
Don't overlook this for free advertisement.
I post relevant content to the type of clients that I want or have experience training. Also I post content that will help my current clients stay on track or help to make healthier choices. Really anything that I feel is relevant to my areas of focus.
the sources that I have used lately range from the mayo clinic, My Plate, science daily, pub med, to precision nutrition articles and any other thing that catches my attention.

Hi Scott
I'm curious your FB page must then be open to all, for a "big platform?" Have you had any unwanted contacts?
Thanks

Yes, I have had some including women asking me if I want to see erotic pics of them (I didn't accept). I am actually getting things up and running with it but have had some success already. As for unwanted contacts, I think it comes with the territory!

Sharing well written articles that may benefit "better living and wellness" are fine with me. I don't think that a little bit of this "advertising" is going to offend most people. Too bad that there isn't more wellness in general being advertised on TV. Don't most of the drug company commercials just promote "bandages", for our poor eating habits and lack of exercise??

Hello Laura,
Lol...I might be the only person here that does not have a Facebook account. Never has peaked my interest.
Wishing You Great Success!
