Both by Michael Pollan:
The Omnivore's Dilemma
In Defense of Food
I have yet to read his "Food Rules" but I'm sure it's recommendable!

One of the best fitness and healthy eating reference book I have seen is a new book by Todd Durkin, M.A., C.S.C.S. " The Impact! Body Plan". It is full of great information as well as the best pictures and inspiring quotes. It lays out a clear plan for 10 weeks of workouts, 4 different workouts per week. Todd is a very smart, enthusiast, and fun master trainer. Take a look at this book.... it's a keeper and one of my favorites.

Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen by Christopher McDougall

Christopher captures the essence of the running spirit, and brilliantly shares his account of seeking answers. His curiosity leads him on a journey not only about running, but about life, passion and heart. The story intertwines adventure, inspiration, motivation, personal discovery, wisdom and of course, running.

"Intuitive Eating," by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch. It is not a diet plan but a real life long way to change your relationship with food and your body so you no longer have to ride the diet roller-coaster!

1. "Women, Food and God" by Geneen Roth
2. "The End of Overeating" by Dr. David Kessler
Both books address the issues of eating habits rather than food itself. Neither of them are diet books but help understand the underlying causes of disordered eating.
The book by Dr. Kessler was particularly helpful for me personally. I have never been overweight, and it is difficult for me to empathize with some of the eating issues because I just cannot get my mind around it. I found the information very compelling and gained a better understanding. I was thereby able to communicate better with my clients.

The New Rules of Posture, How to Sit, Stand, and Move in the Modern World by Mary Bond.
This book is an easy read for people who are starting to "move" again and feel insecure about positions or question if they are doing exercises right. This book is also a great reference for more experienced clients and professionals. As a certified Pilates instructor I love how the book has chapters about breathing, core muscles, pelvis and foot alignments. I teach many concepts from this book already, however, it empowers my clients to learn how to set up their muscle structure during ANY exercise, waiting around in line, holding their baby, how to sit at their computer desk...... etc. The simple imagery from this book sets clients up for success and prevention of tension out there in the world so we don't have to unravel so much during class or a private session.

My favorite two.
1) The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan. This does a fabulous job of teaching us about food- where it comes from, how to read ingredients, philosophy, history, and much more!. I love it.

2) The 6 Week Workout Program by Nick Rainey (me). This teaches everything you need to know at the gym and emphasizes rest between exercises which most people pay no attention to.
