Are you talking about a type hand dynamometer? It certainly also comes under different names. There are bulb dynamometers and hydraulic ones.

dynamometer is what your are talking about. They are used to test grip strength. Just to add new research has shown that poor grip strength correlates with mortality. Not to scare anyone but this could be a good testing measure for clients if used appropriately!
