What is the biomechanical function of the clavicle?

According to Hollinshead's Functional Anatomy of the Limbs and Back, the "clavicle acts primarily to keep the limb free or away from the body." It also acts "to provide movement of the scapula. For this reason "it possesses joints at both ends."
