What is detoxing?

Health and fitnessNutrition

Detoxing is just another word for cleansing. The aim of any detox program is to boost the efficiency of the digestive system. It should stimulate the parts of the body that cleans and eliminate toxins. Detoxing will improve the underlying health making a person less prone to be sick. Using a smart detox program can be great for sustaining great health.

Holly,

As a fitness professional, I am not certified to offer advice on nutrition. I can give facts to my clients, but not opinions on supplements or nutrition programs such as the one you're discussing. I think you'll find that unless a fitness professional is a registered dietitian or has a medical licence or certification, that fitness professional will usually advise a client to discuss such matters with a physician before undertaking such an extreme program. I know of no "detox" programs available that are not harsh on the body.

Think of water as detoxing. We as trainers can certainly support the efficacy of water as a cleanser without going beyond our expertise.

I don't believe in the concept of detoxing and even if I did I would not advise my clients about it simply because it is out of my scope of practice.
If you take a Physiology class you will learn about the efficient way our liver/kidneys are constantly "detoxing us"

Hi Holly. Another poster asked a question about this same topic. My response here would be the same as I posted there. Here it is: In my opinion, you should steer clear of making a recommendation for "detoxing" since this is really not within your skill set, nor knowledge to make such a recommendation (at least not as a personal trainer). This is definitely a topic best discussed by your client with their physicians, but definitely not to be recommended by their trainer.

I hope that this helps.
