There is no doubt that the active older adult market (along with the INACTIVE adult market!) will continue to grow as a solid niche for fitness professionals. The shear number of people who will be shifting into this population will create a strong need for quality programming and knowledgeable fitness professionals who are passionate about reaching out to this specialty market. We all know that regular moderate exercise and healthy lifestyle choices can help people avoid many lifestyle related diseases. The trick is to continue to be creative and diligent about creating welcoming opportunities for this population to climb on board and start reaping the benefits of regular activity. I also know from personal experience, that within this population there is great interest in balance training as it relates to fall prevention. My feeling is that this could also be a successful niche within a niche.

Thanks for the comment Joanne. Wow! That is great news about the Medicare reimbursement. Hopefully, more of that kind of thing will happen in the future. I also follow and enjoy many of your responses to questions. It has been a fun source of info and inspiration to hear other professionals weigh in on timely topics.

I believe the up and coming generations will participate more in circus arts, monkey conditoning, and will train outdoors in adventure sports. Fitness Anywhere trends like TRX, OmGym, and Unnata Yoga blend full body conditioning with Aerial Arts and suspension equipment.
Ninja Warriors will emerge with multiple specialized skills like rope climbing, parkour, and Chinese Vertical Pole! The X Games will discover new Xtreme Sports.

An up and coming niche in the fitness industry is - according to me - the line of fitness consultancy for big companies to keep their workforce healthy. You as health and fitness professional deliver them "turn-key-projects" for their health needs, suited company and workers for their most health profitable environment. Plus it costs the companies less to keep staff healthy than nurturing sick staff.

I agree. The workforce is undoubtedly out of shape, and this area could have potential.

If you're good with kids, you can always do training just for kids. You can run general fitness camps or do sport specific camps.

You can also target women and children as there are a lot of moms who feel like they don't have the time to workout because they don't have anything they can do with their kids.

One last thing, and it's one of my favorites, is bridal boot camps. You can offer them just for brides, but you can get more bang for the buck by offering a discounted rate for the bridal party joining in on the training.

Better trained fitness professionals. Clients expect more from personal trainers and demand quality. There is a big difference between a career personal trainer and someone doing it for fun or temporarily. People can tell the difference and the trend is that we will be held accountable more and be expected to perform to a higher standard in the future.

Hybrid classes that include more than one modality such as Spin Yoga (spinning class followed by yoga) or Yoga Tone (yoga with weights) seem to be on the rise. I just read an article about a type of workout combining breakdancing and yoga. (BuddhaX). Yoga is popular today, but what is beginning to catch the interest of participants are classes beyond traditional yoga. Such classes seem to circle back to the more traditional gym workouts, keeping yoga at it's main focus while reintroducing the fundamentals of other modalities. This allows for many certified fitness professionals who may not be certified yoga teachers to teach these types of classes as well

As the population ages, I think there will be more demand for exercise classes that take into account any physical modifications an individual might need, while also being current and FUN! Group fitness instructors should come up with routines in a chair that do not make participants feel less able, but rather, empowered.

I think that as the baby boomers are influencing the fitness market, the shift to living a pain free lifestyle will take center stage. I recently took the Melt Hand and Foot course and I believe that that will be a welcome addition to the usual strength training, cardiovascular and healthy lifestyle model.

MELT (Myofascial Enegertic Length Technique) !!!! I happen to be an Advanced MELT Instructor, and that's why I am probably biased but I believe that we will see a lot more research over the next few years concerning fascia which has been completely overlooked in its importance.

I teach MELT as a class at a Wellness Center and one-on-one, and the sense of well-being with which people walk away is nothing short of astounding. And it's not just feeling better for the moment. MELT puts the body into better alignment and quiets the stress reflex and thereby allows the body to tap into its natural healing resources.

I believe Medical fitness is an up and coming niche.

Many people have diagnosed conditions that can be improved through exercise.

I think you mean physical therapists. Trainers and exercise instructors should not be confused for physical therapists. Medical fitness sounds like it should fall under the real doctor category like an MD.

Pole Dance and Fitness is definitely an up and coming form of fitness and exercise. The benefits are endless, from strength and flexibility training to overall weight loss and increase in confidence! The work out is fun, yet challenging and is in a safe, non judgmental environment. Typically a women's only gym or studio will offer such classes, but as the trend grows, more and more men are joining in on the fun and realizing the amount of strength it requires to perform particular exercises and moves. It is moving in the way of a sport and there is a petition to get in included in the Olympics one day. There are organizations like the PFA (Pole Fitness Association) that are putting together move names and safe methods and techniques for gyms and studios to teach. XPole and Crunch Gym have collaborated and created an XPert Pole Fitness Certification so people can become certified and teach in gyms and studios world wide. Click the links for more info:
