Outdoor mnt biking is a passion of mine so I most dislike the feeling of captivity and the lack of scenery. I do enjoy working the muscles I'll be using outdoors in a safer indoor environment though. Makes me stronger on a real ride.

I have never been able to establish a happy relationship with the bicycle seat. I still remember my very first indoor cycle class (bad) which was only eclipsed by the second (worse).
Even though I have been told that I could buy special bike shorts and my own seat, I never gave it another try. I realize that I may be missing out on something wonderful but, at this point in my life, I have to take my chances :-)

Karin, appreciated.
I hear that a lot. In fact, it was one of my very worst worries when I tried out cycling. I thought I was doing something totally wrong because I was so sore all the time due to seat. And I kept thinking to myself that there are so many people doing it, how come I get to complain.
But it was a true bliss when I finally learned about and bought my cycling shorts. I always tell members about the shorts - and the seats, but shorts are my favorite - at the end of the class if they complain about the hurt.
This gives me another point to mention "in the begining" of the class, not at the end when someone brings it up since our role is to educate for safe and effective exercise. This may change some people's perspectives faster.

And I have mentioned it to other people as well when they asked me about indoor cycling.

Im not a fan of sitting in one place doing anything..I prefer to bike outdoors.
Oh wow. That's true. Some of you guys are real cyclists. I forget about it...
I don't love being strapped too much myself, but I definitely dislike outdoors, so controlled conditions and climate is perfect for people like me and when needed to train for racing or long and hard rides.

Participating in various types of group fitness is highly subjective.
Personally, I am with Shawn on this one. Although I teach spinning, I prefer to ride a bike outside. I actually prefer improving my ability to ride my unicycle
On another note, during the summer I saw a woman on a spin bike just outside of Central Park advertising her spin class. I thought it was the most ridiculous sight. She could have encourage people to take their bikes out to ride.
However, as I said highly subjective. We participate in the activities that we most enjoy.
Good question.

Though I can respect the workout, indoor cycling is just not for me!
The people at my facility that love it love the escape; the ability to just let go and follow the instructions and drift off. That's not something I've ever been able to accomplish, as I'm always wondering what I'm going to do next-just too antsy!
As a fellow instructor, I have listened in on cycling classes, as the instructors have to be pretty creative with their cueing since there isn't a lot of "extras" they can do to keep the attention of their crowd the same way a Zumba or Turbo instructor can-it's so much more about motivation and visualization!

I've been riding for over a decade now, indoors. Longer outdoors. I've been instructing for just over a year. I've never thought of cycling class as a place where I can "drift off". My guess is that those people who think of it that way are not getting the kind of workout they could be, and that's a shame. Take a class. A good instructor uses the music and the plan to keep you engaged. No way anyone in my class is drifting off and following instructions. I'm way more bored in other fitness classes than I am in a good cycling class.
