One of my favorite activities is to take my dog for a walk, and I invite my clients to join me.

I prefer training outdoors so we go to a park nearby or at the very least do our warm up by walking around the block!
Once people get the outdoor workout bug it's hard going back in!

I live in Alaska...nobody really goes outdoors for 9 months out of the year. I do encourage people to try cross country skiing though, it helps with cabin fever and is an excellent no impact exercise.

I work in corporate fitness and during the Spring, Summer and Fall we usually conduct lunchtime walks in and around the corporate facility. It gets many of the employees that don't necessarily use the gym to get away from their desks and join us.
If we are running a Boot Camp class that is usually held indoors, we may take it outside if it's a particularly nice day!

Has your client ever been on a bicycle? Gone for a walk? Just refresh your client's memory as to how good it felt to ride a bike when he/she was a kid. Or just go for a walk in the rain. Plus the air is much more refreshing than the recycled air in the gym!

I often take my clients on walks during their appointments. We walk on a walking path near my office or sometimes I will have them meet me at a trailhead. I have taken clients mountain biking when I lived in Asheville NC, but not so much now that I am in the Charleston SC area. I had several clients in Asheville who had not ridden bikes in years go out a purchase bikes after riding my extra ones. Another thing I have done is to take groups on walks one day per week and encourage them to walk on their own in between group meetings. I suggest they use a pedometer, GPS watch, or an app downloaded to their smart phone, which makes it more interesting to some people. I suggest they go to geodistance.com and map out where they walked if they don't have a GPS, just so they can see how far they went, etc. I point out that walking outside has been shown to burn more calories due to wind resistance, uneven terrain, etc. and that it also stimulates their brains. I suggest a walking partner as well.
