Good news for you! 10,000 Americans are turning 65 every day. Therefore, the senior wellness/fitness market is expanding. Your expertise is valuable however, since you have not worked for the past two years, get yourself up-to-date and then go for it! I suggest expanding your knowledge of functional fitness, low impact exercise and training modifications. I would think your background, combined with current certifications, would be welcomed at any senior living community or senior activity center. Perhaps you'll find the flexible schedule and clientele you'll enjoy!

What area are you in? My studio is always looking for independent trainers/paid instructors. And if you're licensed for massage therapy in California, I have an independent Massage Practitioner that is looking to have some therapists work under her. Lots of opportunities out there for your background and passions. I would recommend finding a local studio you can train clients independently and run a senior group class out of. Good luck!

Hi. If your certifications are current, and you have the other necessary items to work in the field (e.g. liability insurance etc.) then I'd say that with the combination of your certifications, the sky could be the limit for you. Finding senior clients to train and/or provide massage therapy for should not be too difficult. A person holding certifications/licenses in those two areas can offer a combination of services that few others who only hold a training certification can. The true decision is for you to decide for yourself where you'd like to focus your efforts. In my opinion one of the biggest mistakes that we sometimes make, particularly when we're just starting out in this business, is trying to do EVERYTHING! By trying to do that, we lose the necessary focus to bring our training business from a mere thought to an actual business.
So I say, start by writing yourself a very basic business plan. What do you want to do, and how do you plan to do it. I think that you're already on the right track because you obviously have the motivation. Again though, make sure that your certifications, licenses (if necessary) and basic business needs (such as liability insurance) are in order before you start.
I hope that this helps and good luck to you.

As a woman over 50 myself I can assure you that you will bring your enthusiasm and motivation to those you come in contact with whether it be personal training or massage therapy.
I changed my career path a couple years before turning 50 because I had it with my "desk job" and turned to my love of fitness. Women & men around my age seem to be comfortable working with me rather than the "young kids" (younger trainers).
If you have a difficult time trying to compete with the younger trainers in the commercial industry, might I suggest looking into corporate fitness! I love it!

Training seniors is becoming the next best thing in our industry. There are some great certifications out there that will give anyone the opportunity to get into this age group. I'm sure by now you must have find a way to get into this field and help the older population to stay fit and active.

Opportunity is what you make of your skills and abilities in this industry. While being attractive or young may give an advantage initially, skills and abilities will be the most important attributes in the long run.
Education is the only way to acquire more skills and abilities. I know that in my area, there is literally no one else with my skill set. No one can deliver the services that I can. It took time for people who need my services to see my ads or hear about what I provide. But once I was established and built a history of providing unmatched services, most of my business came to me by word of mouth.
I am as busy as I want to be. My workload cycles a bit, but I market/advertise my business just enough to keep my numbers where I want them. If things slow down more than expected, I would do more marketing in response.
