Chicken Soup!

No really ... works for me all the time!
Studies have shown that hot chicken soup improves the function of cilia, the tiny hair like projections in the nasal passages that protect the body from foreign bacteria and viruses. Steaming chicken soup may also improve the motion of disease-fighting white blood cells.

Also as Lauren suggested, rest is important! Getting plenty of rest and healing sleep is important to boost immune function and give the body time to heal. It is during the deeper stages of sleep that you experience metabolic and tissue restoration.

The tai chi way is to yield like the willow vines blowing in the wind- you will come back to the top when the wind passes. Eat real foods, drink filtered water, practice a stress reduction method, serve others.

If you get sick, let it go through you naturally, rest, create an inner smile, don't fight. Soft is strong.

Hi Lauren
Rest is the best cure. And as mom always says, drink plenty of fluids. Hopefully, all that healthy eating, valuable lifetime ingestion of vitamins and antioxidant will pay off when we need it.

I love Emergen C and Airborne. Along with extra rest, keeping warm, and eating healthy. Other tricks I use is hot orange juice in the morning to help with a sore throat (if you do group fitness or coaching this is a lifesaver!). If its a stomach thing, like Debbie said Chicken soup is a cure all. Its proven that the broth helps your stomach lining. For some reason I also really like saltine crackers to nibble on. If you have access to a threaputic steam room I would take advantage of it as well. Get well soon and good luck with your race!

Yes, rest is great! Here are a few general tips that usually help me:

1. Increase your water intake.
2. Have caffeine free tea (I like to make my own ginger tea, which is good for digestion, and if I'm congested, then it's a mix of tarragon and spearmint).
3. Stay warm and eat warm foods that are easy to digest, such as soups, that are full of veggies and fiber.
4. If congested, consider using a humidifier.
5. Stay clear of dairy and its derivatives (it creates mucous and could further inflame whatever is making you ill).

I'm a big believer in helping the body cure itself naturally without too much interference from medications. If something is wrong, then listen to what your body is trying to tell you!

For colds?

Consider Zinc supplements?

Most homeopathic remedies for colds include zinc as a main ingredient.

I rely on LIVESTRONG as a go-to source... Here is what they have to say about Zinc: http://www.livestrong.com/article/529340-what-effect-does-zinc-have-on-t...

Here is an article from webmd that presents benefits of zinc in cold treatment as inconclusive: http://www.webmd.com/cold-and-flu/cold-guide/zinc-lozenges-cold-remedy

And here is another article from webmd that suggests the opposite of the previous article. Zinc may help to shorten colds when taken in the first few days of the onset of symptoms: http://www.webmd.com/cold-and-flu/news/20110215/zinc-may-prevent-and-sho...

The last article suggests that zinc seemed to prevent colds for five months while the participants took zinc (5 months). Also, you should always ask your physician if these supplements are OK for you to take before you decide on anything. I'm sure a doctor could give you some great tips!

Respect your body and what it's telling you: rest and nurture your mind, body, and spirit. All the supplements in the world are useless if you don't let go of the notion you always have to be in control.

Hi Lauren. I give myself plenty of rest, eat (as tolerated), definitely drink a lot of fluids, and I will sometimes take Airborne (depending upon what kind of 'sickness' I'm feeling). I've been truly lucky in that I generally catch a cold every 10-12 years, and haven't had a flu or flu-like symptoms for longer than I can remember.
