EXERCISE!!! The simple release of endorphins that can boost your mood.
Performing meditative slow movement such as Tai Chi and Yoga can also reduce anxiety & depression.
Anxiety & depression can be caused by a variety of different things such as diet, by drinking too much alcohol or caffeine, drug or supplement interaction, and not getting enough rest.

I suggest the mind, body, spirit programs. Qigong and Tai Chi are excellent for combining exercise and meditation.

In addition to daily exercise with an activity you enjoy, eating a healthy, balanced diet can certainly help with mood. Deep breathing exercises have been shown to reduce anxiety over and over again, hence yoga is an excellent choice. If you can't make it to the gym, try deep belly breathing a home.

It is important to be sure that the anxiety and depression that one is experiencing is not clinical. If it is clinical, then a licensed healthcare professional will be the best person to determine what the best approach is.

Shawn hit it right on the mark. Moderate intensity exercise combined with breathing and stretching exercise is perhaps the best modality. And with Joanne, if the situation appears to be critical, seeing a physician is the best course

Exercise is one of the best things to combat depression. Tons of research to support this!

A handful of cashews daily has nearly the same effect on a person as a daily dose of prozac; without the chemicals. Wanted to give another opinion besides exercise, since it seems to already have been stated.

As a person who suffered with debilitating major depression over 20 years, I have to share two major steps that cured me completely:
1. Exercise indeed. Even a brisk daily walk for about half hour around lunch time can clean your system from the stress toxins of the day.
2. Quit Caffeine, Alcohol and processed sugar. This is a biggie. Caffeine gives you a high, but it also settles your mood with a long lasting and subtle low--directly proportionate to depression. Alcohol is commonly known to be a depressant--need I say more?
Processed sugar affects your body and mind significantly in many ways, causing an imbalance of mood highs and lows.
These and other minor steps completely cleared my major depression after years of uneventful medical and psychological treatment.

Being depressed and then being expected to exercise is sometimes quite an overwhelming task.
People who are depressed are the last ones who want to workout.
With that being said, exercise is a fantastic antedote along with meditation for depression, however that doesn't mean everyone can combat depression without either talk therapy or meds....

Yoga and power walks are two of my favs. 20-30 minutes of music each day helps too. All natural, NO drugs needed.

With anxiety I have found it beneficial to get the client to try and identify why or what has caused the anxiety. Sometimes it's as simple as being new to the club, class or bad memories of a particular movement. I also keep lavender in a bottle with a few hand towels. Moisten the towel, put three drops of lavender and heat for 30-seconds. Lie in a reasonably quiet space and belly breathe in through the nose.
