I'm sorry you are dealing with such pain. I agree with Karin on how this is out of our scope of practice. I would be specific with the doctor and let them know your memory is going! Be persistant, it's your body! Also let him/her know if you are currently doing anything repetitive that would cause these symptoms. (It may be something like sitting at the computer for hours, driving long distance, particular exercises etc) Have you tried seeing a massage or physical therapist? What about seeing a chiropractor?
Please don't give up and you will find what is right for you. Best wishes and keep us posted!

My heart goes out to you. You appear to be in a great deal of pain and have lost your faith in the medical community.

Unfortunately, a scenario like the one you are describing is completely beyond the scope of a personal trainer. I would not make any recommendations, even if I had you right in front of me, let alone based on your description, and sight unseen.

And as it may well be a problem with your cervical spine, you need to find another doctor as quickly as possible. Maybe you have a friend who is a physical therapist who can make a recommendation for one. If I had a problem like the one you are describing, I would look for an orthopaedist or maybe even a neurologist.

I wish you good luck in finding a path out of your pain.

I would suggest going to a Sports Doctor to check it out. They can then refer you to a therapist (who specializes in sports therapy) to get you better. Don't train until you know! Just work on your lower body if it doesn't hurt your spine. Health comes first, figure out the problem then solve it :)

Hi, what do you mean by Cervical? if you dont mind me asking. I aint no doc but I am a British military fitness instructor and have come across alot of problems with the troops. Me personaly would keep it mobile and wouldn't train on it untill I could get a definate answer on what the problem is by another proffesional Doctor.

Dont take the risk by training and making the problem worse!

Pain in the upper traps and shoulder region can stem from a number of things. I have noticed that much of the issues stem from posture. Most often we a subjected to gravity winning in the battle where we see sloping shoulders instead of a nice geometric 90 degree angle. The stress of the elongated trapezius muscles can create discomfort and pain (headaches). Correcting posture alignment and the length/tension relationships will help alleviate pain and also correct many other stemming issues.

Hello, I am currently taking a course that focuses on the very thing you are experiencing.

I think it would be a good idea to visit this site www.postrehab.com. When you get to their site, look for their toll free number. Leave a message and say you are looking for a post rehab specialist in your area.

I believe they will be able to help you.

While I am not a doctor . . Pain in the cervical area can be a number of things. From poor posture, stress, etc. to something much more serious, it can stem from the cervical spine causing nerve pain that radiates to that area. What have the doctors denied? What type of doctor have you visited? Have the doctors sent you for an MRI? X-rays alone will not catch something like a herniated disc for example. These are all things to consider.
Recruit a friend or loved one to help you schedule, accompany you and be present during the visit to the specialist. This way you will have someone else in case you forget. Feel Better!

Hi there,

I just have returned from Australia haven taken two courses in chronic pain as part of an Advanced Master's Degree in Musculoskeletal & Sports Physiotherapy, I would like to share some insight to the topic. Chronic pain courses are not presently being offered yet to american physical therapy programs. It is on the way, but my previous Master's degree, we did not have time nor was it in our curriculum.

Also as a physiotherapist who treats spinal injuries, chronic pain, post surgical >50% of these patients' daily, I would love to share my insight.

First, pain in the upper trapezius can be cause by several things.
1-Pain originating from the soft tissue, fascia and connective tissue--refering pain as myofascial pain-not fibromyalgia.

2-A bulging disc or more severe herniated disc can break through the annulus and impeed on the nerve root commonly C5-C6(most common) are because it is the weakest causing intermittent or constant arm pain.

3-Lifting an item or repeatedly with arm extended is considered a "traction" injury where the nerve has become inflammed. This leads to adaptive shortening of the muscle where trigger points develop, almost like hard nodulated balls that are exacerbated by stress, posture, weather and particular exercises.

4-With chronic pain there are four types: mechanical(structure, soft tissue, joint, etc), inflammatory/nocioceptive, neuropathic(shooting-burning pain that a peripheral nerve is involved) or central sensitization(where the nervous system is upregulated where the sensory cortex in the brain can not distinguish and gate pain).

So at the end of the day, there are multiple potential causes for pain in the neck, that is why this person needs to see an experienced physiotherapist with additional training to "chase" the pain,
descriminate and isolate the pain and treat it prioritizing one area at a time and then reassessing.

Cheers
