Personally, I go through spells of listening to music and not listening to music. Currently, I have the Pandora App on my iPhone and tune into the customized station of my choice whenever I go out for a run or workout. Right now it's 'Beats Antique' radio.
As far as music for my clients, I agree with the other postings.... listen to whatever the clients enjoys most. I still suggest using Pandora, just pop your iPhone into those little portable speakers and set it on a station that they enjoy.

I typically play what the client, or group of clients, like. I do not play anything with negative connotations or negative words. It is all kept positive. Even if the song is not extremely upbeat, I have found that if the lyrics are positive, their motivation will increase and help sustain their workout.

As Victoria says: for the clients, it's up to them. When I teach a water aerobics class, I have a selection of 'lite classics' with waltzes and marches which is very popular.
As for myself: I am a classical music lover, and my very favorite piece of music is the Triple Concerto by Beethoven. To me, this is one of the most upbeat pieces of music ever written.

For me personally I like some rob zombie, pantera, a little rocky soundtrack in there, and whatever gets me ready to move some weight.
For my clients I have an ihome that I let then plug their iPhone or iPod into.

When a client books an hour, it is theirs. They can listen to what they want. Some listen to Country, others Rock. It doesn't matter to me.

I love listening to music while I exercise! I like dancing to music which is also good exercise! As for your question I prefer alternative, rock and dubstep.

I don't often listen to music while working out but I am today. Its a personal thing as I have a tendency to follow the music (moving to the count of getting pumped up during intense portions of songs) and I don't seem to use my full concentration when I'm tiered. When I do, I listen to a bit of everything! Metal, pop, alternative, classical, rap, industrial, rock, techno, you name it; just whatever I'm into at that moment. Currently listening to Hollywood Undead, and I just finished with The Who; maybe a little Rob Thomas or Ozzy for my cool down. Its raining (which makes me sleepy) so today is a music day for sure.

There is so much music out there that I love, that it varies literally from workout to workout! Generally, something upbeat like the soundtrack to Slum Dog Millionaire or something like that. But also, depending on my mood and what it is that I'm working on (e.g. power or other high-intensity workout versus cardio or a "steady-state" lower intensity workout) I may listen to some easy listening like New Age.
