Moving to Scotland...would like to continue training current clients abroad. Any suggestions?

Career Clients

Hi there, I'm moving to Scotland and would like to keep in touch or continue training my current clients. I'm thinking of training my clients via Skype or Gmail chat. I know this isn't as personal as one on one training. Do you have any other suggestions on how I can continue training my clients?

Another alternative would be to use a data base like www.fitclickbiz.com. Once you understand the layout, it is easy to update workouts, diets, and other fitness tools. In addition, the site allows your clients to record their workouts, view their results, and offers a fitness community. There are other simular data bases, but I am not too familiar with them.

It's not as easy as face to face, but it would be much like working with clients who travel a lot. Skype is awesome for such things. if you have done your educational part right, you can write the programs and email, or use training peaks, to provide the programs to them. If they need that personal accountability, and they respect you as an expert, so it would be no issue working abroad.

I'm a military wife and personal trainer, so we move a lot. I often have clients who want to continue training with me either after they've moved or I have. It works best for those clients who already have a strong committment to regular exercise and healthy eatting. Those who need you to give them an "extra push" or who need to know that you're meeting them at the gym or they won't show are not the type of clients who do well with "training from a distance". They also should have a good background in proper form. The last thing you want is them hurting themselves because they don't use correct form and you suggested the program or exercise for them.

I usually create a on-line program for them with photos and videos. I currently use fitnessbuilder.com. They can log in and I can monitor their progress. I also get alerts when they log in a new workout. I also do a weekly or monthly Skype call to review progress, talk about obstacles, and even perform a modified assessment, all depending on the client needs.

You'll also want to think about what you're going to charge for these clients. I usually only recommend this approach to clients I know are self motivated and just need a little extra push. I don't offer this service to all the clients I have. Others I refer to other trainers who could help them reach their goals. Sometimes a good referral is worth gold.

Skype! I use it and love it. Make them communicate with you often via email and perform your sessions by Skype with their profile in hand.
