Is flavored coconut water just as good for you as the non flavored?
I am starting to drink coconut water as an alternative to Gatorade but really like the guava flavored kind. Im wondering if the flavored coconut water gives me all the same benefits as the non flavored.

Jason "Ask the RD" in the IDEA latest fitness journal (June 2011) addresses the question of coconut water. There is no scientific research that backs the claims of excellent recovery drink, a good digestive aid, or immune boasting with inbibing of coconut water. She goes on to mention that it is not the best source for endurance athletes as the ratio of sodium to potassium is not ideal, however, most coconut water products have natural occurring sugar vs. sugar additives. Sports drinks tend to have a more balanced ratio of potassium to sodium for endurance.
To address your flavoring issue, flavoring is usually just an add on, which can be read in the ingredients label. Compare both product labels and evaluate the differences in the nutrients and ingredients labels.

It's just as good for you as in it has all the same nutrients as the non-flavored. But it also has more sugars. So at specific times like after a workout the combination of sugars, protein and fat are great, yet at others might sabotage some of your goals.
As a sweet treat, it packs nutrient density that some other sweet-tooth satisfying items might not!
Decide what your goals are, weigh your advantages and disadvantages and decide what the right answer is for you!
Jason-I just realized I am answering as if you were referring to coconut milk not coconut water! Sorry for the confusion!
