Only when the plastic is the type that emits chemicals when it heats up (#7 and all those cheap disposable water bottles). So for that reason, don't leave your water bottle in the car and don't store water in vehicles for later. Consider buying a higher grade of water bottle and keep it clean with soap and water every time.

The BPA danger from plastics with #7 on the bottom have been a little exaggerated by the media. For a normal adult, drinking from plastic bottles is fine. But, as Jude said, attempt to limit your exposure (just to cover all bases) by not heating the plastic in excess, so keep it away from warm temperatures such as in cars or dishwashers.
However, if you are pregnant, nursing, or are prepubescent than you want to avoid as much BPA exposure as possible, as it has been shown to adversely effect development.

Hello Jason,
You didn't specifiy if the plastic was heated or frozen nevertheless, and I can only speak for myself. I personally do not purchase bottled water soley based on the price and the environmental impact. I simply use filtered water in a refillable metal water bottle.
Sincerely,
Michael

I am not 100% of how unsafe the chemicals from the plastics can be upon the body. I have heard rumors as to their potential dangers but I do not want to spread mistruths. But from another standpoint I would like to mention it is certainly bad for the environment and it is not economical. Bottled water is the big waste of money and the water that is supposed to be at a superior level to tap water may not be holding its value. There is an awesome documentary on this crisis which I watched not to long ago that I highly recommend titled "Tapped"

I heard a while back that once you freeze your water in the plastic water bottle, it has the potential to change the chemical structure of the plastic, and the plastic can sort of... get into... the water. That's important because there seemed to be a correlation (not a cause) with cancer and people who drank out of previously frozen water bottles.
I can't give you the source on this, it's just something that I heard on NBC nightly news not too long ago.
It stands to reason that all of the above are correct in that if the temperature of the bottle is drastically changed, it has the potential to dissociate in the fluid. There may be an article on this in the IDEA library.
