Is anybody familiar with ACSM's Exercise is Medicine Campaign?

American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)Personal TrainerClub or Studio OwnerFitness InstructorFitnessFitness FacilitiesHealth Promotion

Last April I wrote Alaska Gov Sean Parnell and requested that Alaska recognize May as Exercise is Medicine Month, and to my surprise....he did. Is anybody else involved with this campaign in your home state? If so what are you doing to promote it?

Hello Shawn.

I am very familiar with Exercise is Medicine. That is one of the reasons I posed the question earlier.

By now you have visited the Exercise is Medicine website and downloaded the materials the ACSM have provided in order to help get you started. FYI there is a full media kit at your disposal. My family doctor was very impressed with the "Your Prescription to Health Flier Series." He has said it has been helpful to him as far as giving his patients with clinical conditions guidelines to start engaging in physical activity.

Take your time and go through the entire EIM website. Loads of great information.

I also encourage you to read ACSM book, "ACSM's Exercise is Medicine - A Clinician's Guide to Prescribing Exercise. This will be very helpful to you as far as speaking with clinicians regarding viewing physical activity (participation or lack of participation) as a vital sign.

Congratulations on doing your part to encourage people to engage in physical activity.

lol I figured you would be. I am just curious to see how many fitness professionals actually know about it. I only found it because I was looking for a Final Project idea for my last class at CALU

I actually did my Health and Wellness final project using the Exercise is Medicine format but directed at Alaskan Natives in the Interior of Alaska in relation to the alarmingly high rate of diabetes. I combined what we (Interior Alaskan Natives) already have available to us in combination to what is presented in the Exercise is Medicine promotional packets. I was amazed at how much information is there, a trainer really doesn't have to do anything other than print and send or hand it out. There is a template for everything I could think of and even stuff I should have thought of. It is a very usefull and informative site..I was and still am very impressed with it.

Thanks for the book recommendation I will look that up right now.

They have an option for personal trainers on the site, I didn't even consider high risk referrals. I was just paying attention to how to better get medical professionals involved with their clients exercise programs...good point. I was referring to the handouts to the Dr's...didn't notice handouts for clients.
