I actually don't charge a fee but I have had trainers offer me 5-10% of the initial signing in hopes of future references. Real good question, its got me thinking of references past that I didn't get anything for, and what came back to me from it anyhow. In balancing the scales, I would say I've come out ahead from the referals and networking connections alone that I've gotten. I don't know if it would have been the same had I demanded a fee up front. Hmm

Could you continue on down the post to the real issue at hand ? Would love any suggestions to handling the matter

I have offered 10% of the initial package I sell to a referring trainer as a courtesy and promotional incentive. I do not ask for a referral fee as the client's welfare is my concern. I also will not work with a trainer that wants to refer me clients and take a percentage.

Hello Aminanda,
I don't charge a fee and never will. I enjoy helping out the other trainers and promote them as well. It makes us all look good working as a team. I wish them Great Success!

Sincerely,
Michael

Thank you for your feed back. Yes I usually do not charge a fee as I'm helping out a fellow trainer and that's enough payback.
This situation , however, is a bit different and I'm looking for a guide line of pricing to be fair in my handling of the matter
I appreciate the feed back!

It never crossed my mind to ask for a referral fee when I suggested a trainer to somebody. I believe Stephen makes a great point: the value of a good relationship is worth more than the few dollars that you may get.

industry standard for client referral fees

Maybe I should change my question to this
How would you handle the situation of a fellow trainer training a referred client ( by mistake??)
Have said trainer promis to refer their next client to you only to find that they then received a referral from the first client and did not follow through on the promise.
So I'm out potentially two clients who are training each 3x a week.
The original referral was from a long time client and was based on that relationship.
My thought to find some sort of resolution for myself was to ask for a 1 time " referral fee" from this trainer for the initial "mistaken" client

??

Sounds like a slippery slope to tangle with. I personally have dealt with "sharks in the water" amongst the fitness industry. You can ask for compensation but, if they weren't willing to make good on their first promise, you may be dealing with a "shark." As far as I am aware, there is no industry standard. You would be well advised to make your clients aware that you wish to recieve their referrals directly. Use business cards so they will only have your name in mind. Might be best just taking this one on the chin and moving on. Believe me when I say, there are plenty of potential clients to go around.
