I've been paid as both an employee and as an independent contractor. In Vancouver, I'd say the norm is to be hired and paid as an independent contractor.

Yes. In fact, I'd say it's still the more common scenario (at least in Toronto). However, as the industry grows, we'll probably see more employee employment options (complete with health and dental plans, vacation pay, sick days, etc..)
