Why is it that us as a human race had so many "fad" theory's that not only did not help people lose weight or be healthy but created imbalance and lack of health in people?

What has fitness done to help alleviate the obesity epidemic and help creative positive life changing opportunities for individuals. Also, has the industry allowed to collaborate with other professions to better optimize its potential?

Gosh, there can't just be one answer! Have personal trainers come to be recognized as qualified health professionals, not based just on education (although education is the foundation,) but also on experience? Has the effectiveness and safety of group exercise come to be judged on the outcome for the least fit, not the most fit? Has the public been educated to be able to evaluate the efficacy of the myriad infomercials and advertising claims for magical outcomes?
