If you are an Independent Trainer, should you list a gym as an additional insured on your liability insurance?
I have my own insurance as a Trainer, however I've been asked by a gym to list them as "additional insured" if I work for them as a 1099. I've only worked for gyms as an employee and never had to list them on my insurance since they have their own. Don't all gym have to have insurance themselves? (this is a franchise gym - not a mom/pop shop).

Hi Dennise. Ok, with my standard disclaimer that this should NOT be intended as legal advice, most, if not all gyms and studios that you work for as an independent contractor for will "ask" that you include them as an additional insured. It's pretty much standard practice in our industry because in the instances of your work as an independent contractor, since you are NOT their employee, they don't want to be left "uncovered" in case you do something that leads to a lawsuit against you as the trainer and them as the facility in which the injury occurred.

Hi Dennise
I too am an independent contractor and I am often asked to list companies as an additional insured. Gyms usually don't ask, curious? If you are insured through Philadelphia Insurance Company they will allow you to print a COI via their website, after you sign in. It is no cost to you. If not, check with your insurance provider and I'll bet it is not a problem.

Hi Danielle - thanks for your input. Yes, I thought it was curious too - hence my question to my peers. I have no problem listing other companies - but I've never had gym ask me to do this and thought it strange (waiting for their feedback). Unfortunately the insurance carrier I have charges for additional insured.

Hi Dennise,
How about asking the gym to cover the cost of the additional insured?
Yes I know all about the desire to fill the down time. Some people you meet at the gym may be in home clients some day.
Healthy regards

I agree with Danielle. You also might want to look and see if Philadelphia Insurance might give you better coverage.

Hey Denise. Same as LaRue's comment essentially, as a studio owner for many years and an independent contractor training out of multiple gyms prior to opening my own, it is pretty standard practice. Of course every state is different, but it never hurts to simply ask the company your insurance is through on their perspective.

Contact your insurance company and talk to them about it.
