I want to start a coaching business for new group exercise instructors. What should I do first?
I have taught for 25 years and I am a group exercise director. The instructors I find do not have the expertise and polish I am looking for. I want to start a business to coach instructors. How do I get started getting my name out there?

I'm assuming you can contact group exercise instructors in your area through IDEA FitnessConnect :) .... also word of mouth is the very best marketing device so get whatever instructors you do know to "talk it up"!!

if you are already teaching in a club ask the group fitness manager if you can do a seminar for your fellow instructors. then, get their feedback as well as your GFM's. it's a great way to get started!

Coaching fitness instructors is definitely needed. In addition to the other answers, I would also write articles reflecting your expertise in the area of coaching fitness instructors and what it will do to boost their professional success. Post them here on Fitness Connect as well as on LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. Even start a blog. If a fitness instructor is looking for a coach, they will be able to connect with you regardless of geographical location. Good Luck to you!

Network! Try your local colleges, Chamber of Commerce, business owner groups, and don't forget about the power of social media. The more you get your name out the more associated you will become. If you can align yourself with an organization that can help you get established you may have more resources open to you!

Apply to present at major conference such as IDEA, AFAA, AAHPERD and state HPERD, etc
Become an AFAA and ACE continuing education provider.
Write articles.
Give workshops in your own club and invite other clubs. This is how I got started over 25 years ago
I barely teach group today because I do a lot of teacher trainings (group and 1-on-1 training). I make more money and it's less wear and tear on my body

Become an education partner with the American Council on Exercise. Teach their group fitness course and add a practical component to your course. In this way you can do you part in teaching them not only the theory of exercise science but the practical application.
All the best!

Everyone has offered great advice and I agree that it is needed. I would add to that if this is going to be a major component of your business, then blog about, do teleseminars, webinars, meet up with other instructors at Starbucks, etc. Also, consider working on an information product.

This is something I would like to do also
There is a real need for hands on coaching
I have known many qualified trainers with degrees and certifications who need help with basic teaching skills that can't be taught out of a book
Great ideas everyone!
