I have a client who has hypothyroidism. Does anyone have any suggestions/comments on helping her lose weight/inches?
She's been working out with me for several months 3x/week. On days she doesn't workout with me, she does cardio. She has cleaned up her diet, and is a great client! She has had part of her thyroid removed and she takes meds for her condition. She is staying at about the same weight/body fat week after week. Is there anyone who has worked with someone with hypothyroidism that has some suggestions to help?
My first suggestion would the book "Living Well With Hypothyroidism" by Mary Shoman: It is very insightful and extremely useful.
Everyone is different with thyroid disorders. Weight gain is the biggest issue with low thyroid.
Encourage your client to go to Weight Watchers or to meet with a nutritionist who has a background in metabolic disorders.
Have you had an opportunity to looked hypothyroidism and exercise in any of the ACSM textbooks or in any of their journals.
This is a clinical condition and you might want to read a bit of the research related to it.
Hope this gives you some direction.
People with Low Thyroid function called "Metabolically Compromised".They have a low metabolic rate, have difficulty losing weight, and tend to plateau often. You must refer them to a registered dietitian who create customised nutrition program.
Some individuals may need to see a bariatric specialist or board-certified anti-aging physician since most regular physicians are not adequately trained to deal with some of this conditions. (To find a bariatric physician near you, visit www.bariatricnetwork.org; to locate a board-certified anti-aging physician in your area, check out www.worldhealth.net.)

One thing that can help is coconut oil. It's been found that coconut oil boosts not only thyroid function but the metabolism. It accelerates the weight loss process and energizes the body.
In regards to exercise it seems that high intensity training is the favorite and most effective in this case.
Hope this helps!
