I am the fitness director at a University and I am curious-managers: what specific skills do you want recent grads to have?
I do my best to professionally develop every student I work with. Please share what areas you feel recent college grads are lacking so I can better prepare them to be your future employees!

Experience working with a variety of clients and in a variety of formats. I have found that most students are either certified/trained in Personal Training OR Group Exercise when ideally they need to have experience in both. The qualifications I require are a minimum of a BS degree, at least one certification but ideally two. Knowledge or experience on incorporating fitness programming into different markets (corporate, hospital, rehab, etc)
Even with that said the ambitious, energetic, outgoing most prepared candiate always stands out the most!!!!

They should definitely be required to do an internship, shadowing an experienced trainer with several types of clients. I also think a business minor should be incorporated means how every trainer is running their own business.

I know that when I graduated from college I lacked a lot of the business skills. It can be drastic for those students to go out into the real world and have to "sell themselves" and they may completely lose touch of the true reason they are in this business.

Humility. Having a degree undergraduate or terminal doesn't mean you know everything. Be willing to collaborate and learn from others.

Obviously experience is a big one:
They need a business plan and directive toward how they plan on achieving thier goals.
Team up with local clubs and get an affiliation going with them so your students can have the opportunity to have experience as they complete school courses
Perhaps require a certain amount of "teaching hours" in order to complete their course
