What worked for me is taking the Wellcoaches 13-week course. I found it to be extremely indepth.
We met via telephone for 1.5 hours over thirteen weeks. All the students were required to apply the information they learned throughout the course by coaching someone throughout the 13 weeks.
At the end of the course there is a theoretical exam as well as a practical exam. In order to sit for the practical exam one must coach someone for three months and it must be documented for them to review. Wellcoaches has their own portal where you can write your client notes etc.
The practical exam requires that you coach someone for 1/2 hour using the Wellcoaches coaching approach. The individual you will coach is one of the instructors who lead the course.
After you take the course you have one year to take your exam.
I have only positive things to say about Wellcoaches. Taking the course has truly been beneficial to my career and has helped me become a more proficient fitness professional.
Hope this is helpful to you.

Hi Holly
There is also another avenue for coaching, and that is the International Coach Federation. With a fitness, or personal training credential, an ICF certification, and your nutrition background you are a cut above. ICF requires 200 hours of formal training and 100 hours of practical.
All the best

Hi Holly,
I researched a lot of coaching certifications before deciding which one was right for me. I chose to get certified through Wellness Mapping 360 with Dr. Michael Arloski. Check out his website for details at http://realbalance.com/.
I highly recommend reading Dr. Arloski's book "Wellness Coaching for Lasting Lifestyle Change." This is how I discovered his training and the book is a great resource for any coach.
If you call the number on the website you can speak with Deborah, and she was extremely helpful to me. She explained the certification process, answered all of my questions, and set me up on a payment plan.
Best of luck,
Lisa

Holly,
I think it depends on your career goals and what you hope to be doing with the coaching certification. The Institute for Integrative Nutrition is an online year long program with an excellent reputation, but it is more nutrition focused. It's one that I have been considering because of my interest in nutrition. http://www.integrativenutrition.com/
Coach U is another well known program, but there was too much of a time and travel commitment for my needs.

With the ICF, I believe it depends upon the credential. http://www.coachfederation.org/getcredentialed/
I would suggest while conducting your research, you speak to graduates of the
various programs.
If you're not already a member, LinkedIn is a good place expand your networking.
Hope this helps.
