How many of you personal trainers have clients losing a lot of weight and end up with loose skin?
How do you address this problem?

It is one of the realities of significant weight loss. The elasticity of the skin is insufficient to bring the skin back to pre weight gain dimensions. If possible, have your client see a plastic surgeon to explore the options.

I use the rubberband analogy. Just as a rubberband that has been stretch over time will never return to its original state the same is true of the skin. But there are a lot of other factors that come into play from genetics to how much colagen the person has in their skin, hormonal factors to how much weight they gained/lost and how long they carried that weight. Depending on those factors some people will need time for their skin to regain some elasticity, some will never see their skin tighten up again and if they have a lot of lose skin, surgery may be their only way to get the skin tighten up again.

When people are younger, they may be lucky enough that the skin still has some elasticity and retracts somehow. I have seen it in a client of 26 years of age where the look of excess skin was acceptable to her.

It is the unfortunate reality of having been obese for extended periods of time. I refer them to a surgeon if the are hindered, physically from the remaining skin.

Coconut Oil - Works great for the skin elasticity. It is medium chain triglyceride and will help tighten up the skin and also help with moisturizing it.

I can agree with most of the trainers. I especially have a lot of older clients looking to get rid of the extra skin. This is my 1st time hearing of the coconut oil, I will definitely suggest this one to my clients. We work hard to build the muscle, so they know its there I just suggest surgery as well for the loose skin.
