How is Batuka different from other latin dance workouts like Zumba?
I've heard a lot about Batuka lately. Is it similar to Zumba?

Batuka does have a website, http://us.batuka.com/ where you can contact someone to receive information. They teach everything from a variety of dances, to functional training, martial arts, Zen and nutritional advise. Zumba has a Latin base but also includes African style dancing, Bollywood, and so much more. They have created workouts from simple to difficult, for children to seniors and everyone in between, and now toning and water classes.

Actually, Batuka and Zumba are similar in that they both are a fun and effective dance workout. I`m not a specialist in Batuka yet; but it seems that their formula is somewhat different than Zumba and their routines are a little more intricate.

hi. I've been practicing and teaching Batuka and Zumba from they came out. Although they are similar as decribed above, I find that Batuka is more professional about the exercise and aplication of it, and the intensity can be achieved by perfecting the execution of the set routines. Zumba is more about copying and repeating a movement following the instructor so it can feel more free spirited at the beginning but very repetitive after a while. They are both great fun!

I teach BatuKa and Zumba. Both styles' core movements are derived from latin dance (cumbia, salsa, samba, etc.).
Zumba was created in 2001. It's appeal is 'the party': just show up and start dancing. The format is follow the leader and repeat the motions several times throughout a song. There is no 'instruction' or word cuing. Also each Zumba instructor uses different choreography for songs - though there are a few songs which retain a single choreography . Many novices are deterred from Zumba due to it's non-instruction.
BatuKa was created in 2005. It infuses Spanish culture into the movements and all the music is created by Kike Santander. The choreography incorporates dance with martial arts. BatuKa's motions are more complex and thus are taught before the song 'paso a paso' - step by step. While the cardio workout is much more intensive than Zumba, this method relies heavily on the ability of the instructor to teach.
New BatuKa (what you will see in the conference) removes the instruction and cultural dance. Instead, the movements focus on aerobic workout and building motions as a song progresses.
Also, BatuKa's website: http://us.batuka.com/ does not provide any correspondence whereas Zumba trainers are generally really good about replying promptly.

Word cueing depends on the type of Zumba class. There is a lot of word cueing in Zumba Gold, which is a low impact, modified format for beginners, boomers, active seniors, new mothers. Zumba specifically is designed for anyone wanting an easy-on-the-body way to get and stay in shape,

The Zumba Gold style of Zumba uses a lot of word cueing. Zumba Gold is a low impact, modified "party-fitness" for beginners, boomer, active seniors, new mothers and anyone wanting an easy-on-the body way to get and stay in shape. Zumba Gold classes provide fun and a successful "I can do this" attitude with the first class.

I like Batuka more than Zumba. Zumba is just aerobic but Batuka is more than that. It is a full coreography for each song and you dont have to repeat each movement till you`re fed up like in Zumba.
I really enjoy dancing Batuka but for me Zumba is really boring

Well Zumba is a combination of Latin and international Dance basic steps and Fitness we teach you how to use the basic of Latin and international step while adding fitness to your routines to have a fun and effective work out. and i think BAtuka they only use dance moves to put them in routines but not really fitness. this is the first time i seen batuka.

Batuka and Zumba Fitness are similar, both bringing the free-style element to choreography....however, Zumba Fitness incorporates more of the fitness element into the routines.
Batuka may use 'layering' in their routines..while Zumba Fitness may use 'variations'...same thing to me.

Batuka was a copy of Zumba, created in 2005 due to a spanish show similar to "idol". The creator of Batuka was the same as the SPanish Idol and decided to incorporate Batuka to the dance routines of the contestants as Zumba was unknown in Spain at that point. This was an opportunity for Kike Santander to copy the Zumba format, give a twist and ruin it for Zumba in SPain.
