How do you stay motivated to get your own workouts done, when you are training all day long?

FitnessHealth and fitnessMotivation

After a full day of training clients, where do you get the energy and motivation to still do your own workout?

I look at it as 'play time' :-) ..... and also balance time.

My own workouts are not what they once used to be when I sat at a desk the rest of the day. I now enjoy re-balancing my body from the literal ups and downs of the day. I am fortunate enough to have a dog who is the best motivator I can think of for doing a cardio workout. Granted, stopping at the occasional tree :-) does not make it perfect but it is still good enough to pass my own standard.

After a tough day, I may just do a relaxing MELT session. Sometimes I want to try new things on the equipment I have, or exercise to a DVD to let somebody else motivate me.

Tony, my approach is definitely not for everyone, however, it works well for me.

I always keep a pair of Kangoo Jumps either in my truck or at home. You might have seen Kangoo Jumps before. If you haven't google www.kangoojumps.com.

I make all of my necessary running about that is not connected to work my time to train.

Kangoo Jumps are low impact shoes that allow the wearer to engage in high intensity low impact activity anywhere When I go grocery shopping I wear them, when I travel, I wear them, when I go out to the park I wear them.

Another thing that I do is do things that I find enjoyable. for example, this summer I am learning to ride a unicycle and I am learning it is an incredible core workout. A workout doesn't have to be traditional.

One thing that is a constant in my life is that I take time to stretch every morning. If only for about 10-15 minutes, I stretch.

Break it up. Do a little everyday and make it fun. Try something new and you'll stay motivated.

All the best!

Helping others workout is a great motivation for me to get my own workouts in! Yes, I do need to "balance" out my workouts from time to time based on what I've been doing with my clients that day, but being in the gym is a powerful motivator for me.

Often times motivation is fueled by goals. They can be as simple, as mine, complete two to three strength training sessions in a week, and 3 to four runs. I log these on a calender. I am flexible enough to change the runs to long walking sessions or hikes, or the strength training to surfing or biking. Often times I recruit clients or friends to come along. My goal is to do something fun and active every day, preferably outdoors. While many lifestyle coaches believe that goals are more motivating when they are S.M.A.R.T. I personally work best with less restrictions. I will assess my week and mentally plan my time to exercise. Sometimes, it is between clients, before, or after. This is an individual choice based on what works for you.

I fugure if I am making my bootcampers accountable to working out and committing to pushing them selves and if I'm working my personal training clients out to their full potential then I HAVE to make time for my workouts.

I know that my job is dependent partly upon the condition that I maintain a healthy level of fitness. A trainer has to look the part, or at least APPEAR healthy, to be taken seriously. The fact that I fit my workouts into my schedule sets an example for my clients. It shows them that I practice what I preach---making fitness a priority---and that I understand what it's like to fit exercise into a busy schedule. It can be difficult. Like Stephen said, training all day can be a workout, but it's worth putting the proper amount of effort into your fitness, regardless of how you get that work done.

I've subscribed to the videos on IDEAFit and when I'm feeling burnt out from sessions, I follow along with the workout videos. I can learn some new ideas and techniques and also get a great workout without really thinking about it. It's a win-win. I use the new exercises with my clients, too. :)
