How do you obtain medical clearance/advice? Do you send the client to the doctor or contact the doctor directly?
I am just getting into the field and not sure how to go about doing this. I know when to ask for clearance but not sure if I need to send the client to the doctor so they can get checked for clearance or if I contact the doctor with the release form and ask what they think?
I have a form attached to my contract and expect the client to obtain the approval, if applicable. I do not approach the physician with it. It is also a matter of confidentiality on part of the physician who can only disclose to his patient and not to you as third party unless permission has been granted.
There have been times I have wanted to talk directly to the doctor, but you need to fill out a HIPPA compliance form first. This is pretty easy to do; get the form online, have your client sign it and fax it to the doctor. Once this is done (I usually send my email with the form) I have found email the easiest way to communicate with the physician.
I also think that clients should send physician's approval forms to their doctors. Doctors will not automatically give information to third parties
(refer to Janet's statement of about HIPPA forms).
