There is no overarching certifying or licensing body to register all personal trainers/healthcoaches/fitness professionals. Another problem is a whole lot of people who choose to go into this field may not even be certified or have a 4year degree. Until there is some place to register at, we won't be able to get a solid number on people.

Paul Zane calls the wellness industry the next trillion dollar industry. I realize that this is not specifically fitness, however, the fitness industry encompasses health and wellness.

Best!

We know from IDEA's homepage that there's (at the very least) "more than 250,000 fitness professionals with credentials."

Is that especially specific? Not so much, and I realize this. But how would you define a "fitness professional," vs. a "health professional," vs. a "wellness professional?"

Additionally, do you group yourself into one of those three categories or do you classify yourself as something else entirely?

It would be great to hear your thoughts if you've got the time. Hope to hear back from you soon!

This number is constantly changing as the definition for what is a 'fitness professional' continues to evolve. In the bygone years this was pretty easy, count the 'aerobic instructors' and add in a few people calling themselves personal trainers. Now we have so many more defined fitness professionals (e.g. yoga, pilates, aqua, sports performance...). The federal government keeps statistics on certain occupations, so that may be a good place to find out this information.
